A different way to discover fractions in CM1
Recently, our CM1 students immersed themselves in the world of fractions using an active, fun, and collaborative approach. The aim was to develop a thorough grasp of this occasionally abstract mathematical concept by bringing it to life and making it more tangible.
Working in small groups, the students explored various representations of fractions, such as diagrams, drawings, definitions and keywords. Each student was able to express their understanding and contribute to the group’s understanding. This collective work enabled everyone to develop their own interpretation of fractions using both mathematical language and observation.
During the group discussion, participants were able to compare their ideas and representations. This exchange provided an opportunity to structure their learning by identifying the roles of the numerator and denominator, understanding the concept of equal parts and using precise, shared vocabulary.
To consolidate their new-found knowledge, the students took part in a practical problem-solving activity. The task was to divide a cake, pizza or pie into eight equal slices. This fun activity enabled them to apply what they had learnt by manipulating, drawing and discussing different possible strategies.
It was a great way to learn maths in a different way, giving meaning to concepts and fostering cooperation!
